Play a chord.
Melodio names it.

A free MIDI toolbox for musicians. Plug in your keyboard and see every chord on piano and guitar, learn scales, build progressions and stream it all on OBS.

Also available for macOS and Linux · Version 2.0

Showing Chord Display

Melodio makes music theory fun and accessible to everyone, from your first chord to your first stream.

The toolbox

Play it. Learn it. Write it.

Seven modules that share the same keyboard, the same key and the same colours. Open the one you need.

Play · Chord Display

Every chord, named as you play it.

Root, quality, inversion and its degree in the current key. On a piano, on a guitar neck or as notation, in light or dark.

  • Piano & guitar
  • Degree in your key
  • Recent chords
  • Notation
  • Several displays at once

Learn · Chord Dictionary

Any chord, on piano and guitar.

Search a name, see the notes, intervals and voicings, and hear it played back.

Learn · Scales

Every scale, with fingerings.

Modes, exotic scales and the chords they hold, with left and right hand fingerings and audio.

Train · Chord Quiz

Train your ear and your fingers.

Melodio asks for a chord, you play it on your keyboard. Several modes, a score and a timer.

Theory · Circle of Fifths

Pick the key for all of Melodio.

Choose a key on the circle and every module follows: degrees, scales and suggestions.

Create · Progressions

Write a progression. Send it to your DAW.

Capture the chords you just played, pick smooth voicings, loop it at your tempo and play it straight into your DAW or a hardware synth over MIDI.

  • Capture what you play
  • Voicings
  • Tempo & loop
  • MIDI out → DAW
  • Export .mid

For teachers · Chord Display

Put every chord on the classroom screen.

Root, quality, inversion and degree in the key, named as you play. Big enough to read from the back row.

For students · Chord Quiz

Practise until it's in your hands.

Melodio asks for a chord, you play it on your MIDI keyboard. Several modes, a score and a timer.

For teachers · Circle of Fifths

One key for the whole lesson.

Pick it on the Circle of Fifths: degrees, scales and suggestions follow in every module, so the class reads the same theory.

For students · Scales

Every scale, with the right fingers.

Modes and many scales, with left and right hand fingerings and audio playback.

For teachers · Progressions

Build the progression live.

Capture what you play, smooth the voicings, loop it at class tempo and send it out over MIDI.

For teachers · Online lessons

Teaching online? Add it to OBS.

Any module becomes a transparent Browser Source, over your camera for live or recorded lessons.

For students · At home

The same app, at home.

It's free, works offline and needs no account. Students look up any chord in the Dictionary and hear it before the next lesson.

Yes. The desktop app is free, with no account and no subscription. Piano sounds are included and everything works offline.

Melodio isn't code-signed yet, so Windows Defender shows a warning the first time. Click More info, then Run anyway.

It's the same signing issue. Remove the quarantine flag from the downloaded file in a terminal:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine Melodio.dmg

Any class-compliant USB or MIDI keyboard, plus virtual ports such as loopMIDI on Windows or the IAC driver on macOS. If your computer sees it, Melodio does.

Yes. Melodio listens to the same keyboard as your DAW, and Progressions can send MIDI straight into it through a virtual port. Melodio also runs inside your DAW as a VST2 / VST3 plugin.
