For students

Play it.
Understand it.

Plug your keyboard into your laptop. Melodio names every chord you play, shows its notes and intervals, the scale it belongs to and how to play it on guitar. Free, at home, no account.

Also available for macOS and Linux · Version 2.0

What you learn

The theory behind
what your hands do.

Melodio never asks you to read a chapter first. You play, it explains, using the notes you just pressed.

  1. Chord names

Major, minor, sevenths, sus, slash chords: why each one is called what it is.

    Chord Display

  2. Intervals

The distance between two notes: thirds, fifths, sevenths, and how they colour a chord.

    Chord Dictionary

  3. Scales and modes

Major, minor, harmonic, the seven modes, with fingerings for each hand.

    Scales

  4. Piano to guitar

Every chord you play on keys, shown as a guitar shape on the neck.

  5. Keys and degrees

Why G7 is called V7 in C, and how the same chord changes role in another key.

    Circle of Fifths

  6. Progressions

ii–V–I, I–V–vi–IV and the chord moves behind the songs you know.

    Progressions

  7. Reading notation

The chord you play, written on the staff, so the page and the keys finally match.

  8. Ear and reflexes

Hear a chord, find it, play it faster each time, until you don't need to think.

Each module answers one question you have at the piano, using the notes you are holding down right now.

What did I just play?

Hold any notes and read the answer: the chord's name, each note with its interval from the root, the inversion, and its degree in the key. The same chord appears as a guitar shape and on the staff.

C → E4 HALF-STEPS · MAJOR THIRD

Theory · Intervals

Count the half-steps.

Every key, black or white, is one half-step. Four of them make a major third, three a minor third. Melodio labels each note of your chord this way.

C · E · GMAJOR THIRD + MINOR THIRD

Theory · Chords

Stack two thirds.

A major third then a minor third gives a major chord. Swap them and it turns minor. Add one more third and you have a seventh chord.

KEY OF CONE CHORD PER NOTE OF THE SCALE

  1. IC
  2. iiDm
  3. iiiEm
  4. IVF
  5. VG
  6. viAm
  7. vii°B°

In G major, the same G becomes I.

Theory · Keys

Every chord has a job.

Inside a key, each chord gets a Roman numeral: I is home, V pulls back to it. Pick the key on the Circle of Fifths and Melodio numbers everything you play.

Look up · Chord Dictionary

How do I play Cmaj7?

Type any chord name. See its notes, each interval in colour, the voicings on piano and the shapes on guitar, then hear it played back.

Practise · Scales

Which fingers go where?

Major, minor, harmonic and the seven modes, with left and right hand fingerings, and the chords each scale gives you.

Train · Chord Quiz

Can I find it without looking?

Melodio names a chord, you play it. It tells you which note is missing, keeps your score and gets faster as you do.

Understand · Circle of Fifths

Why do these chords go together?

Pick a key on the circle: neighbours share notes, the inner ring shows the relative minors, and every module follows the key.

Practise · Progressions

Play the chords of a real song.

Capture the chords you play, or start from ii–V–I and I–V–vi–IV. Melodio shows the smoothest way to move between them, loops it at your tempo and tells you what usually comes next.

  • Smooth voicings

Questions students ask

Before you start.

Do I need to read music?
No. Melodio starts from what you play. Notation is there when you want it, under the chord you just played.
Which keyboard do I need?
Any USB or MIDI keyboard, even a small 25-key one. No keyboard yet? Try the piano at the bottom of this page.
I play guitar. Is it for me?
Yes. Every chord you play or look up is also shown on the guitar neck.
My teacher uses Melodio. Same app?
The same one, with the same keys and colours, so what you saw on the board looks the same at home.
Does it cost anything?
No. Melodio is free, needs no account and works offline on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Where do I start?
Open Chord Display and play anything. When a name surprises you, look it up in the Dictionary.
