How to read a scale

Steps, degrees, fingers.

  1. The step pattern

Every scale is a pattern of whole and half steps. D harmonic minor goes W–H–W–W–H–W+H–H: the step and a half between B♭ and C♯ gives it its colour.

  2. The degrees

    Number the notes from the root: 1 D, 2 E, ♭3 F, 4 G, 5 A, ♭6 B♭, 7 C♯. The degrees stay the same in every key, so a pattern learned in D works in any other.

  3. The fingering

Right hand: the thumb tucks under onto G. Left hand: finger 3 crosses over onto B♭. Practise the crossings slowly; once they're smooth, raise the tempo.
