How to read a scale

Steps, degrees, fingers.

  1. The step pattern

Every scale is a pattern of whole and half steps. F harmonic major goes W–W–H–W–H–W+H–H: the step and a half between D♭ and E gives it its colour.

  2. The degrees

    Number the notes from the root: 1 F, 2 G, 3 A, 4 B♭, 5 C, ♭6 D♭, 7 E. The degrees stay the same in every key, so a pattern learned in F works in any other.

  3. The fingering

Right hand: the thumb tucks under onto C. Left hand: finger 3 crosses over onto D♭. Practise the crossings slowly; once they're smooth, raise the tempo.
