How to read a scale

Steps, degrees, fingers.

  1. The step pattern

Every scale is a pattern of whole and half steps. G♯ natural minor goes W–H–W–W–H–W–W.

  2. The degrees

    Number the notes from the root: 1 G♯, 2 A♯, ♭3 B, 4 C♯, 5 D♯, ♭6 E, ♭7 F♯. The degrees stay the same in every key, so a pattern learned in G♯ works in any other.

  3. The fingering

Right hand: the thumb tucks under onto B, then the thumb tucks under onto E. Left hand: finger 3 crosses over onto C♯, then finger 4 crosses over onto F♯. Practise the crossings slowly; once they're smooth, raise the tempo.
