G♯ locrian scale
How to read a scale
Steps, degrees, fingers.
The step pattern
Every scale is a pattern of whole and half steps. G♯ locrian goes H–W–W–H–W–W–W.
The degrees
Number the notes from the root: 1 G♯, ♭2 A, ♭3 B, 4 C♯, ♭5 D, ♭6 E, ♭7 F♯. The degrees stay the same in every key, so a pattern learned in G♯ works in any other.
The fingering
Right hand: the thumb tucks under onto A, then the thumb tucks under onto D. Left hand: finger 3 crosses over onto B, then finger 4 crosses over onto E. Practise the crossings slowly; once they're smooth, raise the tempo.
