How to read a scale

Steps, degrees, fingers.

  1. The step pattern

Every scale is a pattern of whole and half steps. F♯ melodic minor goes W–H–W–W–W–W–H. Coming down, melodic minor is played as the natural minor: F♯ E D C♯ B A G♯ F♯.

  2. The degrees

    Number the notes from the root: 1 F♯, 2 G♯, ♭3 A, 4 B, 5 C♯, 6 D♯, 7 E♯. The degrees stay the same in every key, so a pattern learned in F♯ works in any other.

  3. The fingering

Right hand: the thumb tucks under onto A, then the thumb tucks under onto E♯. Left hand: finger 3 crosses over onto C♯, then finger 4 crosses over onto F♯. Practise the crossings slowly; once they're smooth, raise the tempo.
