How to read a scale
Steps, degrees, fingers.
The step pattern
Every scale is a pattern of whole and half steps. F hungarian minor goes W–H–W+H–H–H–W+H–H: the step and a halfs between A♭ and B, and between D♭ and E give it its colour.
The degrees
Number the notes from the root: 1 F, 2 G, ♭3 A♭, ♯4 B, 5 C, ♭6 D♭, 7 E. The degrees stay the same in every key, so a pattern learned in F works in any other.
The fingering
Right hand: the thumb tucks under onto B. Left hand: finger 4 crosses over onto C. Practise the crossings slowly; once they're smooth, raise the tempo.
